There is a major update for employees eagerly awaiting the 8th Pay Commission. With the arrival of July, an announcement regarding the Dearness Allowance (DA) is expected from the government.

Fresh inflation figures have been released, raising expectations that the DA could see an increase of more than 3 percent this time. Let us look at what the inflation data indicates and how much your salary might increase.

**What the inflation data says**
The Labour Bureau has released the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI-IW) data for May 2026. Employee DA hikes are determined based on these figures. The latest data shows a rise in inflation; the AICPI-IW reached 150.8 in May, up from 149.9 in April. Additionally, the annual inflation rate for May stood at 4.72%, compared to 2.93% in May 2025.

Over the past year, significant price increases in food items and clothing have driven a substantial rise in inflation figures.

**How much could the DA increase?**
The Dearness Allowance (DA) will be calculated in accordance with the 7th Pay Commission guidelines, using the AICPI-IW data as the basis. Looking at the figures, the index rose from 146.5 to 148.2 between July 2025 and December 2025, and climbed from 148.6 to 150.8 between January 2026 and May 2026. The average for the last 12 months stands at 148.63. Based on this average and the 7th Pay Commission formula, the Dearness Allowance would work out to approximately 63.7%.

**What is the current DA rate?** Currently, government employees receive a 60% Dearness Allowance (DA), implying a potential hike of 3.7%. However, there is a catch: the government does not factor in decimal points, effectively limiting the calculated increase to 3%.

When will the DA be announced?
Based on the data from May 2026, a salary hike for employees is certain. The process will kick off at the Ministry of Finance as soon as the figures for June 2026 are received. Subsequently, the final approval will be granted during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, and the DA announcement for employees is expected around September or October.
