Major Toll Concession: Government Formulates New Rules for FASTag Annual Passes
Eligible owners of non-commercial vehicles residing within a 20-kilometer radius of a toll plaza may soon be able to obtain an annual local pass via FASTag, thereby alleviating the hassle of repeated toll payments.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has formulated new regulations regarding FASTag annual passes at toll plazas. To provide significant relief to local residents living near toll plazas, the government has issued guidelines concerning annual local passes and concessional rates. Under this new system, owners of non-commercial vehicles living within a 20-kilometer radius of a toll plaza will be offered monthly or annual passes at a very low, fixed fee.
The government stated that the primary objective of this initiative is to reduce the financial burden on locals, eliminate long queues at toll plazas, and make the process of issuing local passes via FASTag completely digital and transparent. Notably, this move will help reduce both the inconvenience and the cost associated with paying the toll every time one passes through.
Locals to Get Unlimited Crossings for ₹3,000
The government will now provide an annual FASTag pass for approximately ₹3,000 to locals residing within a 20-kilometer radius of National Highway toll plazas. A key feature of this pass is that it allows for unlimited crossings within a one-year period. In contrast, the current ₹3,075 pass limits the user to only 200 trips per year.
This means locals can pass through the designated toll plaza multiple times by paying a fixed fee of ₹3,000. While the existing system typically offers a monthly pass option, this new annual facility will eliminate the hassle of frequent pass renewals.
What are the benefits for local vehicle owners? The primary objective of this government initiative is to alleviate the financial burden of frequent toll payments for residents living near toll plazas. Additionally, issuing passes via FASTag can help digitize and simplify the entire process, offering relief—particularly to local motorists—from the cost of daily or repeated toll payments.
Furthermore, this facility can prove beneficial for individuals who need to pass through the same toll plaza daily for work, business, or other essential activities.
