Major Railway Update: Heavy Fines for Lack of Original ID; Strict Checks Start October 1st

Indian Railways is set to enforce stricter ticket-checking measures to prevent ticketless travel. These stricter norms will come into effect on October 1st, mandating that passengers carry an original identity proof in addition to their ticket.

This is crucial information for frequent train travelers. Railways is preparing to strictly enforce ticket-checking protocols during journeys. Passengers must now carry an original photo identity card along with their ticket; failure to do so could result in the cancellation of the journey.

This rule takes effect on October 1st, 2026, requiring passengers to possess an original photo ID during ticket checks. Railways plans to conduct this ticket-checking drive for a full month.

Railway's Strict Measures During the Festive Season

The drive will run from October 1, 2026, to October 31, 2026, a period when passenger volume is expected to surge due to a series of festivals. The checks will specifically target reservations made under quotas that offer specific discounts or eligibility criteria. This is because, during the festive season, people often book tickets under quotas for which they do not actually qualify.

Original Identity Proof is Mandatory

If a group is traveling together—such as a family with a combined booking—at least one member of the group must possess an original identity proof. Otherwise, all passengers in the group could face trouble; this would be considered a violation of railway rules, and the entire group would be treated as if they lacked valid tickets.

A Note of Caution for E-Ticket Bookings

This drive is specifically aimed at passengers who book e-tickets. According to current regulations, any one passenger traveling on an e-ticket can present an original photo ID to verify the identities of the other passengers included in the same booking. If none of the passengers possess a valid ID, all passengers may be treated as traveling without a ticket.

Which IDs are considered valid?

The following IDs are accepted according to the Railways' list:

Passport
PAN Card
Aadhaar Card
Driving License
Student ID Card
Any photo ID card bearing a serial number issued by the Central or State Government
Bank passbook with a photograph
Bank-issued credit card with a photograph

Please note that possessing even one of these IDs will validate your journey and ticket. If you do not have any of these IDs, your travel could be cancelled, or you might be liable to pay the penalty applicable for traveling without a ticket. Therefore, during this festive season, it is advisable to carry an original identity proof with you while traveling.
