The Chhattisgarh government has decided to implement a major, historic change in the state’s school education system. The School Education Department has resolved that, starting from the 2027-28 academic year, the academic session across the state will operate from April 1 to March 31. The objective of this change is to align the state’s education system with other major education boards in the country and to ensure that students have access to all necessary facilities right from the start of the session. In this regard, School Education Secretary Dr. Kamalpreet Singh has issued the necessary directives to the Director of the Directorate of Public Instruction. The department believes that the new system will lead to more organized academic activities and ensure that students receive study materials on time, thereby preventing any disruptions to their studies.

Change to the Current Academic Session

Currently, the academic session in Chhattisgarh runs from June 16 to April 30. This system will now be discontinued. Under the new arrangement, the academic session will begin on April 1 each year and conclude on March 31 of the following year. This will align the state’s academic calendar with that of other major education boards and councils across the country. The government believes that a unified academic session will facilitate better coordination in administrative tasks, examinations, and the conduct of academic activities.

No Change to Summer Vacation

The School Education Department has clarified that the change in the academic session will not affect students’ summer vacations. The summer break will continue to be observed from May 1 to June 15, just as before. In other words, there has been no reduction in the duration of holidays for students and teachers. The change applies only to the timeframe of the academic session, ensuring that studies and other academic activities can be conducted in a timely and organized manner.

All facilities to be available from the first day of the session

To ensure the effectiveness of the new system, the department has instructed all concerned officials to complete the necessary preparations on time. Now, the ‘Shala Pravesh Utsav’ (school enrollment festival) will be organized every year on April 1st, coinciding with the start of the new academic session. From this very day, the distribution of free textbooks and bicycles (under the Saraswati Bicycle Scheme), the provision of school uniforms, and the benefits of other student-friendly schemes will be ensured. This will eliminate the need for students to wait a long time for books, uniforms, or other facilities after the session begins.

Teaching system to become more effective

The government states that the implementation of this new system will allow regular classroom teaching to commence in schools from the very first day. Timely access to all necessary resources ensures that students’ studies remain uninterrupted, while also enabling teachers to implement the academic plan for the entire session on schedule. Furthermore, the conduct of academic activities, examinations, and various student welfare schemes will be streamlined. The Education Department believes this decision will prove to be a significant step towards enhancing the quality of school education in the state and providing a better academic environment for students.
