Just a day before Independence Day, India Post made a major announcement, marking a significant step towards the goal of 'Insurance for All.' The Department of Posts has introduced a major change to the eligibility rules for Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). Previously, only permanent residents of rural areas could avail of this scheme; under the new rule, any individual holding an active savings account with India Post (POSB) or any scheduled bank is eligible to benefit from it. The Department of Posts has directed that this rule be implemented with immediate effect.

The Department of Posts stated that having an active savings account with POSB or any scheduled bank will now serve as an additional eligibility criterion for RPLI. This move eliminates the traditional requirement of residing in a rural area, thereby enabling this affordable, government-guaranteed life insurance scheme to reach a wider range of families.

**Change in RPLI Eligibility Rules**
This change makes it much easier to obtain Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). Residency in a rural area is no longer the sole prerequisite for purchasing the policy; if you hold an active savings account with India Post (POSB) or any scheduled bank, you are eligible. Previously, only permanent residents of rural areas qualified for this scheme.

Under the new rule, any individual maintaining an active (operative) savings account with a scheduled bank or a post office can purchase RPLI.

Certain conditions apply: for post office accounts, eligibility will be verified via the Core Banking System (CBS), while scheduled bank accounts must show at least one customer-initiated transaction within the last 24 months.

It has also been clarified that no separate physical bank certificate is required if digital proof is available; documents such as passbooks, mobile banking screenshots, email statements, or ATM mini-statements will be accepted as valid proof.

What is RPLI?
Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) is a secure life insurance scheme offered by the Government of India. It was launched on March 24, 1995. Its primary objective is to provide affordable insurance coverage to villagers, farmers, and women. Under this scheme, insurance coverage ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹10 lakh can be obtained. A loan facility becomes available after four years, and the policy can be discontinued after three years; however, no bonus is payable if the policy is surrendered before the completion of five years.
