Major Change in PF Rules: Rs 20 Lakh Less at Retirement, but a Lifelong Pension
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has revised its PF rules. While the lump-sum amount received at the time of retirement will now be Rs 20 lakh lower, it will be offset by a monthly pension of Rs 9,600 for the rest of your life. Here is a breakdown of the changes.
Following the EPFO’s decision to increase the salary threshold for Provident Fund coverage from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month, a larger portion of contributions for many employees is now being diverted directly into the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS). Under this new arrangement, a part of the employer's contribution for employees with a basic salary of Rs 25,000 will now be directed toward the pension fund instead of the standard PF account.
As a result of this change, the total lump-sum PF corpus received upon retirement will decrease by approximately Rs 20 lakh. In exchange, the employee will receive a guaranteed monthly pension of about Rs 9,600 for life, starting from the age of 58.
Employees Cannot Opt Out of This Change
This primarily affects employees with an annual salary package of around Rs 6 lakh or less, as the basic salary typically constitutes about half of the total package. On September 17 of this year, the government raised the salary threshold for PF coverage from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000. This change is mandatory, and employees cannot opt out.
Notably, employees hired after September 2014—whose monthly basic salary falls between Rs 15,001 and Rs 25,000 and who were previously not covered by the pension scheme—are now included under its ambit.
Understanding the Calculation of the Monthly Pension
If you have completed 25 years of service, you are granted a 2-year bonus for service exceeding 20 years, bringing your total credited service to 27 years. Based on this, you will receive a monthly pension of approximately ₹9,643. A minimum of 10 years of service is mandatory to qualify for the pension.
In the event of an employee's death, the pension is provided to their spouse for the remainder of their life. Additionally, up to two of the employee's children are also eligible for pension benefits until they reach the age of 25.
Insurance claim of up to ₹7 lakh
PF account holders are provided with complimentary life insurance—known as EDLI (Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance)—by the company. If an employee passes away while in service, their family receives an insurance claim ranging from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹7 lakh.
In summary, a portion of the company's contribution—for instance, ₹2,083 per month—can no longer be withdrawn, invested elsewhere, or provided to your family as a lump sum in times of need. These funds will be available to you exclusively in the form of a monthly pension.
