Messages sent to consumers
Oil companies are sending messages to a large number of LPG consumers in Bihar. It is reported that over 20 lakh consumers across the state, including those in Patna, fall within the scope of this process. The messages request necessary information or clarifications from the consumers. If no response is provided within the stipulated timeframe, action may be taken to halt their subsidy.
Who will be affected?
This decision is likely to impact high-income families the most. This includes government employees, officials, and large-scale business owners. The government maintains that the benefits of gas subsidy should reach only the needy; hence, the eligibility of consumers is being verified.
How many LPG consumers are there in Bihar?
There are a total of 234.65 lakh LPG consumers in Bihar. This includes 110.57 lakh consumers with Indian Oil (IOC), 57.05 lakh with Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and 67.01 lakh with Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL). Notably, Patna district alone has over 13 lakh LPG connection holders, making it one of the districts with the highest number of consumers in the state.
Verification of connections held by deceased consumers
Oil companies are also investigating gas connections registered in the names of individuals who have passed away. Aadhaar records are being utilized for this verification process.
