When might prices decrease?

State-owned oil companies recently hiked the price of domestic gas cylinders by ₹29 on June 7. Prior to that, prices had been raised by ₹60 in March. Similarly, a historic hike of ₹993 was made to the price of commercial cylinders in May, followed by another increase of ₹42 on June 1.

Naturally, this has significantly impacted the budgets of consumers across the country. Meanwhile, following the peace agreement between Iran and the US and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, people are hoping for a reduction in gas cylinder prices. However, immediate relief regarding prices seems unlikely.

Losses for oil companies

The Ministry of Petroleum has already stated that domestic gas prices are kept significantly below actual market costs. The cost of importing LPG and delivering it to your home after refilling amounts to approximately ₹1,600 per cylinder; however, oil companies are selling it to general consumers for ₹942, thereby absorbing a loss of ₹700 per cylinder. It may take some time for this to recover. It is possible that a reduction in prices might be announced following the review meeting on July 1, driven by the drop in crude oil prices.
