As technology is rapidly advancing in our lives, the dangers associated with it are also increasing. With these advancements, new methods of fraud are also emerging. Every day, we face cases of cybercrime. People fall prey to scams related to fake bank OTP or SIM card problems, and now cybercriminals are taking advantage of gas connections as well.

A common scam involves receiving a message on WhatsApp, which reads, “Your gas connection will be disconnected tonight at 9:30 pm.” This message claims to be from your LPG or PNG service provider, but in reality, it is sent by hackers. The real gas company does not send such messages; instead, scammers use these false notifications to cheat people and steal their hard-earned money.

LPG scam: How it works

This scam targets users of LPG or PNG gas services. Generally, the message will state that your gas connection will be terminated due to outstanding bills. It includes a contact number, on calling which, you are connected to someone who seems to be an employee of the legitimate gas company. This person will then instruct you to download a specific app to settle the remaining bill amount, which is usually a small amount like Rs 15-20.

Hackers take control

The real scam begins when you download the app and make the payment. By doing so, you unwittingly give hackers access to your bank account and phone. With this access, they can easily withdraw funds from your account, draining your balance.

Tips to avoid gas connection scams

Do not blindly trust such messages. Verify their authenticity.

Contact your gas connection provider directly to discuss any issues.

Avoid downloading unknown apps and ensure your digital security is strong.

Monitor your bank account regularly for any suspicious activity.

Be vigilant to protect yourself from such frauds. If you suspect you may be a victim, contact your bank or gas service provider immediately.
