A new rule regarding Aadhaar-based biometric authentication for LPG consumers is set to come into effect on October 1. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, completing biometric Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory to book subsidized domestic LPG cylinders at the regulated retail selling price.

What happens if biometric verification is not completed by October 1?

If a consumer fails to complete biometric verification by October 1, it does not mean their LPG cylinder supply will be completely stopped. Biometric authentication can still be completed later. However, the ability to book refills at subsidized rates will be affected until the authentication process is completed.

Biometric verification can also be done via mobile apps.

According to the PIB, consumers who have not yet completed biometric verification can do so at the time of delivery, at the distributor's showroom, or through the respective LPG company's mobile app. Government data indicates that as of September 19, 27.43 crore—or 89.9%—of active domestic LPG consumers had already completed biometric authentication.

What happens if someone does not wish to undergo biometric verification?

If a consumer does not wish to undergo biometric verification or is unable to do so, they can register their preference through the oil marketing company's digital channels. In such cases, they may obtain 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders at market price (without subsidy), subject to availability.
