LPG: Issuance of new gas connections halted—how long will the wait be?

 |

Those looking to obtain a new domestic LPG connection may currently face a wait. A temporary hold has been placed on issuing new 14.2 kg connections in several regions, reportedly due to uncertainties surrounding LPG supplies.

If you are planning to get a new domestic LPG gas connection, this news is important for you. The process of issuing new 14.2 kg domestic gas connections has been temporarily suspended in many parts of the country. The primary reason cited for this is the ongoing tension in West Asia and the resulting uncertainty regarding LPG supplies.

According to gas distributors in several cities, no new connections for domestic LPG cylinders have been issued since mid-March. However, priority is being given to refill deliveries for existing customers to ensure there are no disruptions in the gas cylinder supply.

Why have new LPG connections been halted?

According to the Ministry of Petroleum, the issuance of new LPG connections has been temporarily suspended in light of the current situation in West Asia. Uncertainty regarding LPG supplies persists, which is why companies are focusing more on meeting the needs of existing customers. Meanwhile, the government has clarified that this suspension is not permanent; new gas connection services are expected to resume once conditions normalize.

How many applications for new connections are pending?

A large number of applications for new LPG connections are pending across various cities in the country. In several locations, including West Bengal, distributors reportedly have an average of 100 to 120 pending applications for new connections. Most people are choosing to wait for a domestic LPG connection rather than opting for temporary alternatives.

What are the alternative arrangements for customers?

For those awaiting a new domestic connection who require gas immediately, small cylinders are currently available for use.

One can use the 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder. 10-kilogram composite cylinders are also available in some locations.

However, the demand for these smaller cylinders has risen rapidly across many cities; sales have seen a significant surge, particularly in cities like Delhi and Mumbai.

When will new LPG connections be available?

Currently, the government has not announced a specific date for the launch of these new connections. According to officials, this suspension is merely a temporary measure, and the issuance of new domestic LPG connections will resume once international conditions improve.
