The Election Commission has released the dates for the upcoming elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry. With the announcement of the election dates, the Model Code of Conduct has also come into force across all these states.

The dates for assembly elections in several states across the country have been announced. The Election Commission of India has released the schedule for elections to be held in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Immediately upon the declaration of the election dates, the Model Code of Conduct was implemented across all these states and the Union Territory. According to the Election Commission, voting will take place on April 9 in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, while votes will be cast in Tamil Nadu on April 23. In West Bengal, voting will be conducted in two phases: the first phase will be held on April 23, and the second phase on April 29. The election results for all these states and the Union Territory will be declared on May 4.

Meanwhile, following the announcement of the election dates, a question has arisen in the minds of many voters: can one still cast a vote if their Voter ID card is lost on election day? In light of this, let us explain today how you can cast your vote if your Voter ID card goes missing, and which alternative documents will be considered valid.

You Can Still Vote Even Without a Voter ID

According to the Election Commission, the Voter ID card—also known as the EPIC (Elector's Photo Identity Card)—is considered the most common and valid form of identification for voting. However, if for any reason this card is unavailable, a voter can establish their identity using other valid documents and proceed to cast their vote. At the polling station, officials verify the voter's identity based on these documents. If the voter's name appears in the electoral roll and their identity proof is valid, they are permitted to cast their vote.

Which Documents Are Considered Valid Proof of Identity?

If you do not possess a Voter ID card, you can still cast your vote by presenting any one of the following original documents at the polling station to verify your identity: a Passport, Driving License, Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Bank or Post Office Passbook with a photograph, Service Identity Card (with photograph) issued to government employees, Smart Card issued under the NPR, MGNREGA Job Card, Health Insurance Smart Card issued by the Ministry of Labour, Pension Document with a photograph, or an Official Identity Card issued to Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs), or Members of Legislative Councils (MLCs).

Photo Voter Slips Do Not Confer Voting Rights

The Election Commission has clarified that a Photo Voter Slip alone is not accepted as a valid proof of identity. This slip serves solely for informational purposes; therefore, it is mandatory to present a valid identity card alongside it at the time of voting.
