If you are considering getting a duplicate driving license, this information is important for you. In the event that your license is lost or stolen, you can apply for a duplicate DL right from your home. Here is the complete process.

There is always a risk of losing or having items like wallets, mobile phones, and other essentials stolen while traveling. Most people keep their driving license in their wallet. Imagine if your wallet were lost or stolen one day, and your driving license went missing along with it—what would you do? Instead of panicking, you can apply for a duplicate driving license online.

Can everyone apply from home?

Generally, many tasks related to driving licenses can be handled from home; however, keep in mind that for certain services, you may need to visit the RTO depending on the rules of your specific state. In other words, a fully online facility is not available in every state. Even after applying online, people sometimes have to visit the RTO. However, if this facility is fully available online in your state, you can apply by following a few simple steps.

Do this immediately if your driving license is lost

If your driving license is lost or stolen, file an FIR at the nearest police station without delay. Filing an FIR has several benefits: if your license falls into the wrong hands and is misused, the FIR protects you from trouble; additionally, a copy of the FIR is required by the RTO when applying for a duplicate license.

How to apply online?

To get a duplicate driving license, first visit the Parivahan/Sarathi portal.
Next, select your state and navigate to 'Driving Licence Related Services'.
Then, enter your license number and date of birth (DOB), and click on 'Duplicate DL'.
Enter all the required information and upload the requested documents.
Finally, pay the prescribed fee and submit the application. After this, follow the further instructions provided on the portal.

Know about the required documents.

Please note that the documents required to obtain a duplicate driving license may vary depending on your specific situation; however, the following documents are generally requested:

Damaged or torn driving license
Proof of address and passport-sized photographs
Form LLD (for a duplicate license)
Copy of the FIR filed regarding the loss of the driving license

Driving without a DL can prove costly

If you do not possess a driving license—or if it has been lost or stolen—do not drive without a valid one. Driving without a license can lead to legal action against you under the Motor Vehicles Act. Additionally, a fine of ₹5,000 may be imposed in accordance with the rules. Moreover, in certain cases, it could even result in imprisonment.
