Losing your job could mean losing your coverage; here’s why personal health insurance is essential.

While a company-provided health insurance policy is helpful during your employment, that safety net can vanish the moment you switch jobs. Limited coverage, co-payment clauses, and various terms and conditions can make the cost of major medical treatments a heavy financial burden.

Employees often receive health insurance as soon as they start a job, leading them to believe that purchasing a separate policy is unnecessary. However, this oversight can cause problems later on, as the insurance coverage remains valid only as long as you are employed by that company.

The biggest drawback of employer-provided health insurance is that once you leave the job—whether you quit voluntarily, are laid off, or take a career break—you lose your entitlement to that coverage. This is why relying solely on company-provided health insurance is not considered a prudent choice.

Limited coverage and co-payment clauses can be problematic.

Corporate health plans often come with limited coverage amounts. Reports indicate that many corporate policies offer coverage ranging from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh. However, if someone contracts a serious illness, hospital treatment costs can far exceed this limit.

Additionally, some policies include co-payment clauses. For instance, if a policy has a 20% co-payment requirement and the hospital bill amounts to ₹10 lakh, the patient might have to pay 20% of the eligible expenses out of their own pocket.

Challenges at Retirement

If an individual relies entirely on their employer-provided health insurance and purchases a separate policy for the first time only after retirement, pre-existing medical conditions could make premium costs and coverage terms challenging.

Why is Personal Health Insurance Important?

A separate health insurance policy remains active even during job changes, career breaks, or after retirement. Options such as individual cover for young people and family floater plans for families are available. Additionally, opting for a separate senior citizen policy for elderly parents helps preserve the coverage of the family's primary policy.

Option of Super Top-Up with Base Policy

To enhance protection against substantial medical expenses, one can consider a 'super top-up' plan alongside the base health insurance policy. This provides coverage for additional expenses once a specified deductible limit is exceeded. This approach offers greater protection at a lower premium compared to purchasing a single, very high-value base cover.

Points to Consider When Purchasing a Policy

Before buying health insurance, it is crucial to understand terms such as room-rent limits, co-payment, waiting periods, exclusions, and disease-specific sub-limits. Even minor limitations within the policy terms can impact the payout amount at the time of a claim. Furthermore, providing accurate medical information during the application process is essential, as withholding details can lead to claim disputes in the future.
