What are the eligibility criteria for becoming a Loco Pilot?

To become a Loco Pilot in Indian Railways, a candidate must have passed the 10th and 12th-grade examinations. Additionally, they must hold a two-year ITI certificate in trades such as Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Wireman, Automobile, or a related field. The minimum age limit is 18 years, and the maximum is 30 years. Candidates belonging to reserved categories receive age relaxation in accordance with government regulations.

How does the selection process work?

To become a Loco Pilot, candidates must go through the Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) recruitment process conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). This process begins with CBT-1 and CBT-2 examinations. Subsequently, a psychometric or aptitude test, a medical test, and document verification are conducted. Candidates who successfully clear all stages are called for training.

What medical parameters must a Loco Pilot meet?

1. Vision Test – Eye examination is crucial for the role of a Loco Pilot. The A1 medical category—considered the strictest—applies to the ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) post in the Railways. This requires distant vision of 6/6 in both eyes; the use of spectacles or contact lenses is not permitted for this role. Additionally, accurate color perception and clear night vision are mandatory. Candidates are also tested on their ability to correctly identify red, green, and yellow railway signals without difficulty.

2. Hearing Test – Loco pilots must constantly pay attention to engine noise, horns, wireless messages, and sounds emanating from the tracks. Therefore, normal hearing in both ears is essential. The medical examination checks for any hearing impairments or ear infections.

3. Physical Fitness – Loco pilots are required to work while seated in the engine for extended periods, often under adverse weather conditions and challenging circumstances. Consequently, the medical test evaluates body balance, the functionality of limbs, spinal health, blood sugar levels, and general physical fitness.

4. Mental Health – The job of a loco pilot demands constant alertness; thus, the candidate's mental health is also assessed. The examination evaluates the candidate's ability to make sound decisions under stress, their level of concentration, and their capacity to handle situations involving anxiety or panic.

5. Heart and Respiratory Tests – The Railways ensures that candidates can work for long durations without health issues. To this end, tests are conducted to assess heart function, lung condition, and respiratory capacity.

Where does the first posting take place after training?

Candidates are not immediately assigned the responsibility of operating a train after passing the medical test. First, they must complete railway training. Upon completion of training, candidates are appointed as Assistant Loco Pilots (ALP). Initially, they are typically deployed on freight trains. Based on experience and performance, they are subsequently entrusted with the responsibility of operating passenger trains, followed by express or premium trains.

What is the salary?

According to the 7th Pay Commission, the starting basic salary of an Assistant Loco Pilot is ₹19,900 per month. Upon promotion to Senior Loco Pilot, the basic salary can range from ₹35,000 to ₹60,000 or more. After adding Dearness Allowance (DA) and other allowances, the total in-hand salary can range from approximately ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 per month. In addition to the basic salary, Loco Pilots receive Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance, Night Duty Allowance, overtime pay, and a 'running allowance' based on the kilometers covered.
