Local Police to Issue e-Challans; Crackdown on Traffic Violations in Delhi

Local police in Delhi may soon be empowered to take action against traffic violators. Delhi Police has submitted a proposal; once approved, local personnel will be able to issue e-Challans by capturing photographs of the violations.

Motorists flouting traffic rules on Delhi's roads may face increased scrutiny. It will no longer be just the traffic police; personnel from local police stations and other units will also be able to take action against vehicles violating regulations. Delhi Police has drafted a proposal to this effect and submitted it to the Delhi government for approval.

If the government approves the proposal, local police personnel on patrol will be able to photograph vehicles violating traffic rules and issue e-Challans. The primary objective of this move is to enhance road safety and curb traffic violations.

How will the new e-Challan system work?

Until now, the authority to issue challans for traffic violations rested primarily with the traffic police. Under the new system, local police personnel will be able to photograph violating vehicles and upload the images to the e-Challan app. Based on the photographs and vehicle details, the challan will be issued to the vehicle's registered owner. Significantly, this will reduce the workload on the traffic police and enable enhanced surveillance across a wider area.
