The Delhi Government has introduced a new welfare initiative aimed at securing the future of girls from economically weaker families. Named the Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Scheme, the program offers financial assistance at different stages of a girl's life—from birth to higher education—to encourage continuous education and promote women's empowerment.

The scheme, which came into effect on April 1, 2026, has been launched by the Department of Women and Child Development (GNCTD). Through this initiative, the government aims to reduce school dropouts, discourage child marriage, and provide financial support that helps girls complete their education without economic barriers.

Financial Support from Birth to Higher Education

Under the Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Scheme, eligible girls will receive financial assistance at various educational milestones. The objective is to ensure that financial hardship does not prevent children from continuing their studies.

The scheme was officially notified in the Delhi Gazette on March 31, 2026. According to the government, timely financial assistance throughout a girl's academic journey will encourage school enrollment, improve retention rates, and create better opportunities for higher education and career development.

Who Can Apply?

The scheme is available to girls who meet the eligibility criteria prescribed by the Delhi Government. The key conditions include:

  • The girl child must be born in Delhi.

  • The applicant's family must have been residing in Delhi for at least three years.

  • The family's annual income should not exceed ₹1.20 lakh.

  • The student must be enrolled in a government or government-recognized educational institution in Delhi.

  • A maximum of two daughters per family can receive benefits under the scheme.

  • The beneficiary must not be married before attaining the age of 18 years.

Only applicants fulfilling all these conditions will be considered eligible for financial assistance.

Registration Stages Under the Scheme

The government has allowed registration at several important stages of a girl's educational journey, ensuring that eligible families can apply even if they miss the initial enrollment period.

Applications can be submitted during the following stages:

  • Within one year of the girl's birth.

  • At the time of admission to Class 1, Class 6, Class 9, and Class 11.

  • After passing Class 10, when enrolling in a Polytechnic or ITI course.

  • At the time of admission to Class 12.

  • During admission to a graduation degree or diploma program.

  • Students pursuing higher education or government-recognized professional diploma courses are also eligible.

This multi-stage registration system has been designed to ensure that deserving students continue receiving support throughout their education.

Online Application Process

The Delhi Government has made the application process completely digital to simplify registration for eligible families.

Applicants can register through the dedicated online portal launched for the scheme. During the application process, candidates must upload the required documents and complete the registration as per the prescribed guidelines.

To assist citizens, the government has also established Help Desk-cum-Facilitation Centres at every District Women and Child Development Office across Delhi. These centres will help applicants with:

  • Online registration.

  • Document submission.

  • Application-related queries.

  • Grievance redressal and technical assistance.

The support centres are expected to make the application process easier, especially for families with limited access to digital services.

Higher Education Students Also Covered

Unlike many welfare schemes that focus only on school education, the Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Scheme extends benefits to students pursuing higher studies.

Girls enrolled in undergraduate degree programs, government-recognized universities, colleges, professional diploma courses, or institutions affiliated with statutory government bodies can also avail themselves of the scheme, provided they meet the prescribed eligibility requirements.

This broader coverage aims to encourage more young women to complete higher education and improve their employment prospects.

Objective of the Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Scheme

The primary goal of the Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Scheme is to strengthen educational opportunities for girls belonging to low-income families. By providing financial assistance at critical stages of education, the government hopes to reduce dropout rates, delay child marriages, and empower girls to become financially independent.

Officials believe that the initiative will play an important role in improving female education, promoting gender equality, and supporting long-term social and economic development. By investing in girls' education today, the scheme seeks to create a stronger and more self-reliant generation of women in the future.
