Ladli Behna Yojana: Why Ineligible Women Risk Losing ₹1,500 Monthly Benefit After Verification

The Madhya Pradesh government’s flagship welfare initiative, the Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana, continues to provide financial support to millions of women across the state. At present, over 1.26 crore women are receiving a monthly installment of ₹1,250 under this scheme. Soon, this amount will be increased to ₹1,500, with Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announcing that the enhanced benefit will begin after the festival of Bhai Dooj.

However, in the midst of this expansion, the government has also launched a verification drive to ensure that only eligible women remain on the beneficiary list. According to officials, names of ineligible women who do not meet the eligibility criteria will be removed before the ₹1,500 payout begins.

Government Prepares to Strike Off Ineligible Beneficiaries

The administration has received reports that many women who are not eligible for the scheme are still receiving payments. To address this, officials will re-examine the records of all 1.26 crore beneficiaries using the state’s Samagra ID database. Women found ineligible during the verification process will be removed from the scheme’s list of beneficiaries.

This step comes ahead of the planned increase in benefits. By 2028, the state government has also pledged to raise the monthly amount further to ₹3,000. While this move will benefit millions, the administration is keen to prevent misuse and ensure that only genuinely needy women receive the financial aid.

Eligibility Criteria for Ladli Behna Yojana

The Ladli Behna Yojana was introduced to extend financial assistance to married, widowed, and divorced women in Madhya Pradesh. To qualify, women must be between 21 and 60 years of age and fulfill certain income and employment-related conditions.

A woman becomes ineligible if:

  • Her annual family income exceeds ₹2.5 lakh (more than ₹20,833 per month).

  • She or any family member files income tax returns.

  • She or a family member works in a government job or is a retired government employee, including permanent, contractual, or daily-wage staff in central, state, or local bodies.

Women who fail to meet these conditions will not be entitled to the revised ₹1,500 benefit.

Option to Voluntarily Surrender Benefits

The government has also made it possible for ineligible women to voluntarily surrender the benefit before action is taken. If someone continues to receive payments despite being ineligible, the administration may initiate recovery proceedings.

The surrender process is simple and can be done online:

  1. Visit the official Ladli Behna Yojana portal.

  2. On the homepage, select the “Benefit Surrender” (लाभ परित्याग) option.

  3. Enter your Samagra ID or Ladli Behna application number.

  4. Complete the captcha and click on “Send OTP.”

  5. Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number.

  6. Tick the declaration form and save the application.

Financial Burden on the State

Running the Ladli Behna Yojana already requires the Madhya Pradesh government to allocate over ₹1,500 crore every month. With the increase to ₹1,500 per woman, the financial burden is expected to rise significantly. This comes at a time when the state is already relying on loans to fund welfare programs.

Despite the fiscal pressure, the government has assured that the scheme will continue and even expand, provided that only eligible women remain on the rolls.

Final Word

The Ladli Behna Yojana has become a lifeline for many women in Madhya Pradesh, strengthening financial independence and household stability. But with the upcoming increase in benefits, the state is determined to prevent misuse by removing ineligible names.

For women who truly qualify, this scheme will continue to bring much-needed financial relief. Those who do not meet the criteria, however, risk losing their monthly assistance—or even facing repayment demands—if they fail to voluntarily surrender their benefits in time.
