Bicycle train parcel charges: You can take your bicycle along during long-distance journeys on Indian Railways; however, you must adhere to specific rules. Passengers often arrive at the platform with their bicycles in a rush or without proper information, leading to significant last-minute difficulties. While railway passengers are permitted to carry luggage on the train, they must follow the correct procedure to do so.

Bicycles are not included in the free luggage allowance applicable to standard bags and suitcases. According to railway regulations, the weight of the free luggage you are allowed to carry inside the coach does not cover bicycles. Whether you are traveling in Sleeper Class or AC Class, a bicycle is always classified as a separate parcel or item of luggage. Therefore, paying a separate fee is mandatory to transport it.

How to register your bicycle as luggage:
Arrive at the railway station's luggage and parcel office at least 2 to 3 hours before your train's scheduled departure. Book the bicycle as luggage by presenting your confirmed train ticket and a valid identity proof. After paying the prescribed fee, you will receive a booking receipt. Keep this receipt safe until the end of your journey, as it is required to claim the bicycle at your destination station.

Bicycles are transported in the guard's coach, not the passenger coach:
Can you keep the bicycle with you inside the passenger coach? The answer is a definite no.
Taking a full-sized bicycle into the passenger coach is strictly prohibited.
Once booked, your bicycle is loaded into the brake van located at either the very front or the very rear of the train. If you have a folding bicycle that fits into a small bag, you may be permitted to carry it into the train cabin, subject to certain conditions.

**Penalty for carrying a bicycle without booking**
If you take your bicycle directly into the train coach without booking it as luggage and are caught on the platform, railway checking staff may impose a heavy fine. In such a scenario, you could be liable to pay a penalty several times the standard luggage charge, and your bicycle might even be confiscated. Therefore, never take the risk of traveling with a bicycle without obtaining the necessary booking receipt.
