**Formula for Ticket Confirmation Based on Waiting List Status**
The Railways has outlined a formula to determine the chances of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed, helping passengers understand the likelihood of confirmation. On average, 21 percent of passengers cancel their tickets after booking, which can free up seats for those on the waiting list. Additionally, about 4 to 5 percent of passengers do not board the train despite having booked a ticket; these seats can also be allocated to waitlisted passengers.
Furthermore, the Railways maintain an emergency quota and reserve specific seats. If this quota is not fully utilized, these seats can also be allocated to passengers on the waiting list.
**Potential Number of Confirmations per Coach**
A sleeper coach typically has 72 seats. If 21 percent of passengers cancel their tickets and 4–5 percent do not undertake the journey, the combined figure suggests that approximately 18 seats per coach could become available for confirmation. Extending this calculation to 10 sleeper coaches (10 coaches × 18 seats) means that 180 passengers from the sleeper class waiting list could potentially secure seats. This calculation applies to 3AC and 2AC classes as well. However, the number of ticket cancellations and passengers dropping out of travel plans is usually low during the festive season. Since most people travel during Diwali and Chhath, the likelihood of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed is quite slim.
How to increase the chances of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed
To avoid the uncertainty of a waitlisted ticket, you should book well in advance. Ticket bookings open 60 days before the date of travel; booking 60 days early gives you a 99% chance of securing a confirmed ticket. However, during the festive rush, you need to complete the booking within the first 15 minutes of the window opening. General ticket bookings start at 8:00 AM. If possible, opt for less busy routes instead of high-traffic ones. Also, keep your travel dates flexible so that you can try booking for different days to secure a confirmed seat.
