The Income Tax Department on Wednesday provided significant relief to companies and taxpayers requiring an audit for the assessment year 2025-26. The department extended the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for these taxpayers to December 10th. The deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for these taxpayers is typically October 31st. Let us explain the update provided by the department.

IT Department Provides Relief
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the administrative body of the Income Tax Department, said in a statement that the Board has extended the due date for filing income tax returns for the assessment year 2025-26 from October 31st to December 10th, 2025. Furthermore, the deadline for submitting audit reports for these taxpayers has been extended to November 10th. According to the Income Tax Act, companies, partnership firms, and proprietorship units requiring an audit are required to file their returns by October 31st. For personal income taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), the deadline remains July 31.

The Income Tax Department's decision to extend the deadline was made in response to industry requests and the disruptions to business activity in states affected by natural disasters and floods. Previously, on September 25, the department had extended the deadline for filing audit reports by one month to October 31. This has now been further extended to November 10. The deadline for filing ITRs for individual taxpayers for the assessment year 2025-26 was also extended from July 31 to September 16 this year. Over 75.4 million returns were filed during this period, of which 12.8 million taxpayers paid self-assessment tax.
