If you've filed this year's Income Tax Return (ITR) and its status shows 'Processed,' but your refund hasn't yet been credited to your bank account, you're not alone. Many taxpayers are complaining on social media that their returns have been processed, but they haven't received their refund. If this has happened to you, there's no need to worry. With a few simple steps, you can check your refund status and get your money back within minutes.

Last Chance to File ITR
The last date for filing ITR for Assessment Year 2025-26 (AY 2025-26) was September 16, 2025. The government extended the deadline twice this time—first from July 31 to September 15 and then for 24 hours to September 16. Taxpayers in the non-audit category benefited from this, while the deadline for filing ITR for those with audit cases is still October 31, 2025.

According to tax department data, over 76.8 million returns have been filed, of which 61.1 million have been processed. Despite this, a large number of taxpayers are facing delays in receiving their refunds.

Why are refunds delayed?
It often happens that even though the ITR appears to be processed, the refund does not reach the account. There can be several reasons for this.

Sometimes, the bank details or IFSC code are entered incorrectly, or sometimes the refund gets stuck due to an error in TDS or tax credit.

Sometimes, the refund amount is released, but it can take 15 to 30 days to reach the bank. Therefore, be sure to match your bank details with the information provided in Form 26AS first.

What to do if your ITR has been processed but your refund hasn't arrived?
First, log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Go to the Refund/Demand Status section.
If it says the refund has been processed but the money hasn't been credited to your account, check that your bank account and IFSC code are correct.
If everything is correct and the money hasn't been credited, go to the portal and submit a 'Refund Reissue Request'.

The refund will be reissued.

Contact your bank or NSDL.
If the RFD code is displayed on the portal but the money hasn't been credited to your account, you can contact NSDL or your bank branch. Sometimes, transactions are delayed due to technical reasons. Typically, refunds are credited to your account within 15 to 30 days of processing.

Which taxpayers receive their refunds quickly?

Non-audit category taxpayers, i.e., those whose income is from salary, bank interest, or normal income, have their ITRs processed faster. These individuals typically file their income, deductions, and TDS details on the Income Tax e-filing portal, after which the government verifies and processes the return.

If your ITR shows 'Processed' but the refund hasn't arrived yet, there's no need to panic. Simply follow the steps above and find out where your refund is stuck within a few minutes. If your bank details are correct, the refund will automatically be credited to your account within a few days.
