For those taxpayers whose accounts are not to be audited, the last date for filing income tax returns (ITR Filing Last Date) is 15 September 2025. This time, the deadline for filing ITR has been extended. Last year, 31 July was the last date for filing returns. Income taxpayers have now started filing returns. According to the Income Tax Department website, 75,18,450 returns had been filed till July 1. Of these, the department has also verified 71,11,836 returns. The Income Tax Department issues refunds to the taxpayers' accounts only after filing income tax returns. Do you know how many days after filing the return you will get the ITR refund? If you don't know, no problem, today we will give you this information.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had told a few days ago that due to automation and process improvement in the Income Tax Department, income tax refunds are now being issued within an average of 10 days. But experts say that this is an average time. That is, the time taken to get a refund can be different in every case. It is possible that a person gets a refund only eight days after filing the income tax return, and it may take 15 days for someone.

Verifying ITR is necessary

The Income Tax Department will not issue you a refund just by filing the income tax return. For this, you will have to verify the ITR. The Income Tax Department processes the ITR only after the taxpayer verifies it. The taxpayer can verify their ITR online. After the taxpayer's return is verified, it now takes an average of ten days to process it. If the verification is done offline, then it may take more time to process, and you will also get a refund later.

5 major reasons for the delay in the refund
The Income Tax Department carefully verifies every return. If the claim information is recorded in Form-16, then it takes less time to process. If the information is not updated in Form-16, the processing time increases. Apart from this, the refund is also delayed due to other reasons. Let us know about them.

Not doing e-verification: Just filing ITR is not enough. Unless you e-verify it online, the return is not processed, and a refund is not issued.

PAN and Aadhaar not linked: If your PAN number is not linked to Aadhaar, then the Income Tax Department can hold your ITR.

Error in TDS details: If the TDS information filled in your ITR does not match with Form 26AS or Annual Information Statement (AIS), then the matter can go into investigation.

Wrong bank information: If you have filled the bank account number or IFSC code incorrectly, then the refund will not reach your account.

Not responding to departmental email or notice: If the department contacts you for any information and you do not respond, the refund can be stopped.

If you need a refund soon, then do these things
To avoid delay in refund, it is important to link PAN and Aadhaar, provide correct bank details, and accurate TDS information. Also, do e-verification immediately after filing the ITR. You can do this work with Aadhaar OTP, net banking or other digital options. By keeping all these things in mind, you can get your income tax refund on time.
