At present, the process of filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for Assessment Year 2025-26 is going on. But as the last date for filing ITR, September 15, 2025, is approaching, taxpayers and professionals are demanding that it be extended, citing some technical glitches.

According to media reports, the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has written a letter to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) recommending the extension of the deadline.

The last date has already been extended.

In the month of May of the current year itself, the government had extended the deadline for filing ITR from July 31 to September 15, 2025. CBDT had admitted that major changes have been made in ITR forms and other rules. Therefore, the government had decided to give more time.

Why this demand arose

GCCI said that at present, taxpayers and chartered accountants are facing many problems. Therefore, they will not be able to file returns on time. According to the organization, the problems include -

Delay in release of ITR utilities and forms: Utilities usually available in April were released in July 2025 this time. Apart from this, taxpayers had to wait till August for many forms. ITR-5 utility was released only on August 8, leaving very little time to prepare and file non-audit cases.

Technical problems: Problems like system error, log-in failure, and timeout are constantly occurring while uploading ITR and tax audit reports on the portal. Apart from this, due to errors in Form 26AS, AIS and TIS and delay in updates, there are many difficulties in preparing returns.

Pressure of new statement: The new standardized format implemented by ICAI for non-corporate utilities has further lengthened the compliance process.

Festivals: According to GCCI, the festivals falling between August and November have also affected the work of tax professionals.

GCCI says that in view of the current situation, the deadline for non-audit matters should be extended from September 15 to October 30, 2025.
