The reason for this is being told that this year the income tax refund will not come until the income tax return report and assessment order of previous years is completely reviewed by the Income Tax Department. However, in the year 2025, so far more than 75 lakh taxpayers have filed income tax returns. Out of these, the returns filed by about 71.1 lakh people have also been verified by the Income Tax Department. Earlier, it was told on the Income Tax Department website that how many income tax returns have been processed, but at present that section appears empty.
Last date for filing income tax return
Every year the last date for filing income tax return was till 31 July, but this time the Income Tax Department has extended its date to 15 September 2025. This year taxpayers are filing income tax returns from May 2025 itself. It is also being told that this year income tax filing has started about a month late. Experts believe that the old income tax returns and pending scrutiny are being cleared first by the Income Tax Department.
Returns will be available after reviewing old returns
A report by Hindi website Money Control says that this year refunds may be delayed. Discussions about this started in April itself. Now that lakhs of people have filed their income tax returns, discussions about refunds are once again in full swing. There is a lot of discussion among tax experts that this time taxpayers may face difficulty in getting refunds. The Income Tax Department has instructed its officials to put a hold on the refunds of those taxpayers whose scrutiny of old years is pending or has not been assessed.
