ITR Filing Last Date: Just a Few Hours Left to File, Miss It and You May Face Penalty

The government extended the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline by one day, making today, September 16, 2025, the final date. Taxpayers now have until midnight tonight to file their returns for Assessment Year 2025-26 (FY 2024-25), as per the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
So far, the Income Tax Department has received over 7 crore returns, of which more than 6.03 crore have been verified and about 4 crore have been processed. The extension largely benefits non-audit cases such as salaried individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and small traders or professionals.
