ITR Filing Deadline: Will the ITR deadline be extended beyond July 31? Find out the latest update from the Income Tax Department..
Income Tax Return Deadline Extension: Today, July 31, 2026, is the last day to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2025-26 without incurring any late fees. As happens every year, the question is once again circulating rapidly on social media and among taxpayers: will the government or the Income Tax Department extend this deadline?
According to indications from the Income Tax Department, there is a very slim chance of the ITR filing deadline being extended this time. Taxpayers should file their ITR today itself rather than waiting for any relief or an extension of the date.
Will the ITR filing deadline be extended?
According to sources within the Income Tax Department, the government is currently not considering extending the July 31 deadline. The reason for this is that the income tax e-filing portal is functioning very smoothly this year, and no major technical glitches have been observed despite heavy traffic.
So far, over five crore taxpayers have filed their ITRs. The department believes that taxpayers were given sufficient time; therefore, there is no valid reason to extend the deadline.
What happens if the ITR is not filed by today, July 31?
If you fail to file your income tax return by midnight on July 31, 2026, you will face the following consequences and penalties:
Late Fee (Section 234F): If your total annual income exceeds ₹5 lakh, you will have to pay a late fee of ₹5,000. However, if your total income is up to ₹5 lakh, the late fee will be ₹1,000.
Interest Burden (Section 234A): If you have any outstanding tax liability, you will be required to pay simple interest at the rate of 1% per month on the outstanding tax amount, starting from August 1. Inability to carry forward losses: If you wish to carry forward losses incurred from the stock market, F&O, or property to future years, this facility will not be available if you file a belated return after July 31.
Opportunity to file a belated return
Those unable to file their return by July 31 can submit a belated ITR by December 31, 2026. However, they will be required to pay a penalty and interest for doing so.
Useful advice for taxpayers
Income tax experts advise ignoring rumors circulating on social media regarding a deadline extension. To avoid the last-minute rush and server congestion, complete the process by filing your ITR-1 or the relevant form today, and do not forget to e-Verify the return.
