ITR Filing Deadline Extended; Major Relief for Businesses
The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) has recently been extended once again. Businesses and taxpayers subject to tax audits now have an additional 21 days to complete this process.
The Income Tax Department has provided significant relief to companies and businesses required to undergo tax audits. The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns and tax audit reports for the financial year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27) has been extended by 21 days. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced this on Monday.
For companies and businesses whose accounts require a tax audit, the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns has been extended from October 31 to November 21, 2026.
Tax Audit Deadline Also Extended
Meanwhile, the deadline for submitting tax audit reports has been extended from September 30 to October 21, 2026. This means that businesses and companies subject to tax audits will now have an extra 21 days to prepare their reports and returns. This measure offers them some much-needed relief.
Why Was the Deadline Extended?
The extension follows persistent requests from tax experts and business owners. They argued that, this time around, multiple tax-related tasks had to be completed within a short timeframe. Businesses needed to reconcile income tax figures, GST records, and accounting data—a process that is time-consuming. Additionally, September saw several tax filing deadlines. Work pressure had also mounted due to festive holidays and banking-related issues.
No Impact on Salaried Taxpayers
It is worth noting that the deadline for salaried taxpayers to file their ITR was July 31, 2026. Meanwhile, for businesspersons or professionals whose accounts did not require an audit, the deadline was August 31, 2026. According to the Income Tax Department, over 7.8 crore ITRs had been filed for the Assessment Year 2026-27 by August 31.
