Do you have your refrigerator and gas cylinder placed right next to each other in your kitchen? While this might seem like a common practice to many, it is advised not to keep them together. Find out why.

There are several items in the kitchen that require special care and handling. If you have placed your gas cylinder and refrigerator close to one another, do you know if it is actually safe? People often place them side-by-side due to a lack of space, but in certain situations, this can prove to be dangerous.

It is common knowledge that refrigerators contain a compressor and various other essential electrical components. When the fridge is switched on or off, a small spark can occur within these parts. The critical point to understand is that if there is a gas leak from the cylinder, a spark from the fridge could ignite the gas and cause a fire.

The danger posed by heat emitted from the fridge

Additionally, the compressor works to cool the fridge, and when it operates, it releases heat from the back of the appliance. Conversely, it is advised not to keep LPG cylinders in hot areas. Placing a cylinder in a high-temperature zone can cause the internal gas pressure to rise. This is precisely why keeping the cylinder near the fridge is not recommended.

How far apart should they be kept?

Regarding the safe distance between an LPG cylinder and a refrigerator, it is recommended to maintain a gap of at least 5 to 6 feet. Always place the cylinder in a well-ventilated area; avoid locations exposed to direct sunlight or places with poor air circulation. Keep in mind that it is advised not to place appliances like microwaves or other electronic devices near the gas cylinder. Therefore, if you have placed your gas cylinder and refrigerator right next to each other in your kitchen, move them so there is a distance of 5–6 feet between them.
