In today's digital age, a mobile number has become an essential part of our identity. From banking to social media, online shopping, and government services, a mobile number is required everywhere. Amidst this, cases of fake SIM cards and cyber fraud are also increasing rapidly. Sometimes, a person doesn't even realize that someone else has activated a SIM card using their ID, which can lead to major problems later on. So, let's tell you today how you can check if a stranger is using a SIM card registered to your Aadhaar card.
How many SIM cards are allowed on one Aadhaar card?
According to new telecom rules, a maximum of 9 SIM cards can be active on one person's Aadhaar card. However, in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the North-Eastern states, this limit is set at 6 SIM cards. If more than the prescribed limit of SIM cards are found to be active, there is a provision for penalties. Also, if a SIM card is active on your ID that you are not using, you could be held legally responsible if it is misused. If that SIM card is used in fraud, cheating, or any illegal activity, you may face trouble. Therefore, it is very important to know how many and which SIM cards are active on your ID.
How to check how many SIM cards are active on your Aadhaar?
To check how many SIM cards are active on your Aadhaar, the Department of Telecommunications has provided the Sanchar Saathi and TAFCOP portals. Through these, you can find out in minutes from the comfort of your home.
First, go to the website tafcop.dgtelecom.gov.in or sancharsaathi.gov.in.
Now, fill in your mobile number and captcha on the homepage.
After that, you will receive an OTP on your number; enter it and log in.
Upon logging in, a list of all the mobile numbers linked to your ID will appear on the screen.
What to do if you see a fake or unknown number?
If you see a number in the list that you don't recognize, you can report it by clicking on the "Not My Number" or "Not Required" option next to it. After filing the complaint, you will receive a ticket ID or reference number. Following an investigation, the fake SIM will be deactivated or removed from your ID. There is no fee for this service, although it may take a few days for the SIM to be deactivated.
