Yet, there is another alternative available—one that most travelers are unaware of—which allows you to get a confirmed ticket directly without any extra charges. This is known as 'Current Booking'.

Typically, a train's first reservation chart is prepared approximately four hours before its scheduled departure. Even after the chart is finalized, some seats may remain vacant, or passengers might cancel their travel at the last minute. The Railways makes these remaining seats available for booking—both at counters and online—under the 'Current Booking' category. These seats can be booked up to five minutes before the train's departure, and you are guaranteed a confirmed ticket.

**No Extra Charges**

When booking a Tatkal ticket, the Railways usually charges an additional fee ranging from ₹100 to ₹500 over the standard fare; however, 'Current Booking' involves no such extra cost. You pay only the standard ticket fare, with no additional premium or Tatkal fees applied. On certain routes and trains, the Railways may even offer a special discount ranging from 10% to 30% on the base fare to fill these remaining vacant seats.

**No Refund**

Tickets booked under the 'Current Booking' scheme are non-refundable. This means that if you cancel the ticket, you will not receive any money back. Therefore, you should only book a ticket this way if your travel plans are certain.
