In India, a nurse’s salary depends on their experience, location (city), and the type of hospital they work in. At the entry level, the salaries for staff nurses or home nurses are relatively lower; however, as their experience grows, their remuneration increases significantly.

International Nurses Day: International Nurses Day is celebrated every year on May 12th. This day is observed globally to honor the contributions, hard work, and spirit of service demonstrated by nurses worldwide. From providing patient care to managing healthcare services during emergency situations, nurses are considered the most vital link in the healthcare system. The theme for International Nurses Day 2026—“Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives”—emphasizes the critical need to provide nurses with better resources, respect, and a safe working environment. In India, too, the nursing profession is growing rapidly; across both government and private hospitals, nurses’ salaries are determined primarily based on their level of experience.

What is the Salary Range for Nurses in India?

In India, a nurse’s salary is contingent upon their experience, qualifications, city of residence, and the specific type of hospital where they are employed. At the entry level, the salaries for staff nurses or home nurses are modest; however, as experience accumulates, earnings rise—particularly for specialized roles such as those in ICUs, OTs, or hospital management. For instance, a staff nurse with 0 to 3 years of experience typically earns between ₹10,000 and ₹15,000 per month. In comparison, a home nurse with 0 to 3 years of experience earns between ₹9,000 and ₹16,000, while an OT (Operation Theatre) nurse with 4 to 7 years of experience earns between ₹14,000 and ₹25,000. Similarly, an ICU or CCU nurse with 4 to 7 years of experience can expect a salary ranging from ₹16,000 to ₹25,000.

What is the Salary in Government Hospitals?

In India, nursing positions within government hospitals are widely regarded as the most secure and stable career options available. Nurses employed at institutions such as AIIMS, ESIC hospitals, Railway hospitals, and various state government medical facilities receive attractive salaries and allowances in accordance with the provisions of the 7th Pay Commission. At central government hospitals, the basic salary for a Nursing Officer starts at approximately ₹44,900. Once allowances such as DA (Dearness Allowance), HRA (House Rent Allowance), nursing allowances, and other benefits are added, the total monthly salary can reach up to approximately ₹1 lakh. In state government hospitals, nurses’ salaries typically range from ₹55,000 to ₹85,000 per month. In addition to this, employees also receive benefits such as job security, a pension, medical facilities, and opportunities for promotion.

What is the Salary in Private Hospitals?

In the private sector, salaries vary significantly depending on the specific hospital and the city. While starting salaries tend to be lower in smaller hospitals and clinics, large corporate hospitals—such as Apollo, Fortis, and Max—offer very attractive salaries to experienced and specialized nurses. For newly recruited nurses in private hospitals, the monthly salary typically ranges from approximately ₹30,000 to ₹50,000.

Which Cities Offer the Highest Salaries for Nurses?

Nurses’ salaries tend to be relatively higher in India’s major metropolitan areas. For instance, private hospitals in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad offer better compensation packages. In Delhi, the monthly salary for nurses is typically upwards of ₹40,000. Similarly, in Mumbai, the monthly salary also exceeds the ₹40,000 mark.
