Live gas is now used in most households in India. Thanks to the government's Ujjwala Yojana and other initiatives, the availability of LPG cylinders has expanded from rural to urban areas. However, few people are aware that consumers also receive free insurance cover worth lakhs of rupees with a gas connection.

This insurance is provided to provide financial security to the family in case of an accident. So, let us tell you today how many lakhs of rupees worth of insurance is available with a gas connection and why you should know this important information about gas connections.

How many lakhs of rupees worth of insurance is available?

When a new gas connection is purchased or an old one is renewed, consumers automatically receive a fixed insurance cover. There's no need to fill out a separate form or pay a premium. Companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas offer this facility. This insurance covers losses due to accidents like gas leaks, fire, or cylinder explosions. Upon purchasing a gas connection, consumers receive accidental insurance cover of up to ₹50 lakh. Each family member receives coverage of up to ₹10 lakh, with a maximum benefit of ₹50 lakh for the entire family. Claims of up to ₹2 lakh can be made in case of property damage. Personal accident cover of up to ₹6 lakh is available in the event of death. Additionally, a maximum of ₹30 lakh is available for medical treatment, with a maximum benefit of ₹2 lakh per member. This insurance amount is disbursed directly to the family, but requires that the gas cylinder, regulator, pipes, and stove be ISI-marked and that they undergo periodic checkups.

What conditions must be met?

Only customers who comply with the necessary regulations can avail of gas connection insurance. For example, the gas cylinder's pipe, stove, and regulator must be ISI-marked. There should be no exposed electrical wires in the gas connection. It's mandatory to report the gas cylinder and the nearest police station within 30 days of the accident. Documents such as a copy of the FIR, medical bills, hospital records, and, in the event of death, the post-mortem report are required for the claim. The insurance amount is only credited to the person in whose name the gas connection is held. There's no option to add a nominee.

How can you claim insurance?

If an accident occurs involving a gas cylinder and you wish to claim insurance, first inform your LPG distributor and the police station. An insurance company official will then conduct a ground visit and investigate. Upon confirmation of the accident, the insurance company approves the claim. The consumer does not need to submit a separate application; the distributor initiates this process. This insurance claim can also be made online, for which the consumer can visit the website mylpg.in.
