Insurance: What benefits do you get from third-party insurance for bikes and cars?

It is crucial for anyone driving a car, bike, or other vehicle to be aware of third-party insurance. In India, third-party insurance is not merely an option for vehicles on the road; it is a mandatory legal requirement. The Supreme Court has recently commented on this matter and directed the IRDAI to extend the tenure of third-party insurance policies, mandating a duration of six years for bikes and four years for cars.

If you are purchasing a new vehicle—whether a car or a bike—obtaining third-party insurance at the time of purchase is mandatory. Furthermore, traffic authorities check for third-party insurance alongside the vehicle's own insurance coverage. Failure to possess third-party insurance can result in a traffic challan (fine) being issued by the police. The Supreme Court has also ordered that provisions be made to deny fuel (petrol or diesel) to vehicles that lack insurance coverage.

**Benefits of Third-Party Insurance**
While the vehicle owner does not receive a direct benefit from third-party insurance, it offers significant relief. This insurance comes into play if your vehicle causes injury or death to another person, or damages another person's vehicle. In such instances, the insurance company covers the resulting losses or liabilities.

In other words, if your vehicle is involved in an accident that causes harm to another person, the insurance company bears the cost of compensation. The affected party is referred to as the "third party."

The primary advantage is that it shields you from sudden, massive financial burdens. Additionally, it alleviates the stress associated with hefty compensation claims or legal battles following an accident.

**How the Insurance Works**
When an accident occurs, you must first notify the insurance company. Subsequently, the company assesses the damages. Once the investigation is complete, the claim is settled in accordance with the applicable rules. The insurance company covers any losses or damages suffered by the third party. Please note that to claim insurance, your policy must be valid on the relevant date. Additionally, you must possess a driving license and other necessary documents.
