If you purchase tickets at a reservation counter, this information is for you. Directives have been issued to implement insurance coverage for those who purchase tickets offline, effective from October 27.

While many people today prefer the convenience of booking train tickets online from home, there are still many who visit railway ticket counters to make their purchases.

If you are among those who buy tickets at railway counters, there is an important update for you: soon, you too will be eligible for insurance coverage. The Supreme Court has directed the Railways to provide insurance to passengers who purchase tickets at railway counters.

When will this facility come into effect?

The Supreme Court has instructed the Railways to implement this facility by October 27. Previously, insurance coverage was only available to passengers who booked their tickets online; however, the Court has now ordered that passengers purchasing tickets offline be brought under the same insurance umbrella.

Railways to appear before the Court

The Supreme Court has summoned an official from the Railway Board to appear on November 16. During this hearing, the Court will assess the progress made by the Railways in implementing the directive to provide insurance to those purchasing tickets offline.

Railways to be held accountable for delays.

The Court has mandated that this facility for passengers buying tickets at counters be introduced by October 27. Furthermore, the Court has stated that the Railways will be held responsible for any failure to implement this facility. Notably, the Court had previously asked the Railways to consider this matter, but it observed that no concrete steps had been taken.

What will be the benefit for passengers?

This arrangement by the court will significantly benefit passengers who purchase tickets at reservation counters. They, too, will be able to avail of insurance coverage—much like those who book tickets online—which can provide financial support in the event of a train accident, in accordance with the terms of the insurance policy. However, specific rules regarding claims and coverage will apply.
