If you live in Delhi and want relief from your monthly electricity bills, here is some useful news for you. The Delhi government has launched its online portal for the installation of solar panels under the 'Delhi PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.' Residents can use this portal to apply for rooftop solar installations for their homes.

According to the Delhi government's 'Delhi Solar Portal,' the facility to submit solar applications went live on September 21, 2026, at 2:30 PM; this means residents of Delhi can apply online starting today.

Where do you need to register?

To register, you must visit the Delhi government's official 'Delhi Solar Portal.' On the portal, navigate to the 'Apply for Rooftop Solar' section to submit an application under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. During the application process, you will need to provide details regarding your electricity connection and the proposed solar installation.

How much subsidy will you get?

This scheme offers a subsidy from the Central Government. Domestic consumers receive a central subsidy of ₹30,000 per kilowatt for solar systems up to 2 kilowatts. For systems between 2 and 3 kilowatts, the subsidy is ₹18,000 per kilowatt. For systems with a capacity exceeding 3 kilowatts, the total central subsidy is capped at ₹78,000.

The Delhi Government is also providing an additional subsidy.

In Delhi, consumers will receive a subsidy from the state government in addition to the central subsidy. Under the Delhi Solar Policy, domestic consumers are granted a state subsidy of ₹10,000 per kilowatt, subject to a maximum limit of ₹30,000. Furthermore, there is a provision for Generation-Based Incentive (GBI) for electricity generated via rooftop solar systems. For domestic systems up to 3 kilowatts, the GBI is ₹3 per unit. For systems exceeding 3 kilowatts up to 10 kilowatts, it is ₹2 per unit.

What size solar panel (in kilowatts) is suitable?

If your household consumes between 0 and 150 units of electricity per month, a 1 to 2 kW solar system may be appropriate. For a consumption of 150 to 300 units, a 2 to 3 kW system is suitable, while for consumption exceeding 300 units, a system larger than 3 kW can be installed.
