India’s Kitchens Get a Makeover: Lightweight Plastic LPG Cylinders Aim to Replace Heavy Metal Ones

Indian households may soon witness a major shift in the way cooking gas is stored and used. After decades of dependence on bulky red metal LPG cylinders, a new lightweight plastic LPG cylinder has been introduced, promising better safety, easier handling, and smarter design. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently launched this next-generation cylinder in Goa, marking the beginning of what could be a nationwide transformation in domestic cooking solutions.

Developed by Bharat Petroleum under the Bharat Gas Lite brand, the new cylinder is designed to address long-standing issues associated with conventional metal LPG cylinders, especially safety concerns, excessive weight, and lack of visibility of remaining gas.

Why Traditional Metal LPG Cylinders Needed an Upgrade

Metal LPG cylinders have been a reliable part of Indian kitchens for years, but they also come with several limitations that affect everyday usability. One of the biggest challenges is their heavy weight, which often makes handling difficult for women, elderly users, and even delivery personnel. Over time, these cylinders are also prone to rust and corrosion, especially in humid regions.

Another major concern is safety. During external fires, metal cylinders can build up internal pressure, increasing the risk of sudden bursts. Additionally, users have no clear way to see how much gas is left, often leading to inconvenient mid-cooking shortages.

These practical issues created the need for a safer, lighter, and more user-friendly alternative.

What the New Plastic LPG Cylinder Is Made Of

The newly introduced plastic LPG cylinder is manufactured using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) combined with advanced fibreglass composite materials. Unlike metal, this material does not corrode or rust, ensuring a longer lifespan and improved safety.

The cylinder has been launched on a pilot basis in Goa and is expected to be gradually introduced in other cities before expanding to major metro areas across the country.

Nearly 50% Lighter Than Traditional Cylinders

One of the most noticeable advantages of the plastic LPG cylinder is its significantly reduced weight.

  • Traditional metal cylinder

    • LPG capacity: 14.2 kg

    • Cylinder weight: around 17 kg

    • Total weight: approximately 30–33 kg

  • Plastic LPG cylinder (Bharat Gas Lite)

    • LPG capacity: 10 kg

    • Cylinder weight: 5.9 kg

    • Total weight: about 15.9 kg

This drastic reduction makes the new cylinder far easier to carry, install, and replace, offering much-needed convenience to households.

Advanced Safety Features for Modern Homes

Safety is where the plastic LPG cylinder truly sets itself apart. The cylinder is designed to withstand test pressure of up to 120 kg, compared to around 80 kg for traditional metal cylinders.

In the event of an external fire, the HDPE body does not explode suddenly. Instead, it melts gradually, allowing controlled release of gas and significantly reducing the risk of a blast. Its rust-free and corrosion-resistant structure further enhances long-term safety.

These features make the new cylinder a more reliable option, especially in densely populated residential areas.

Smart Design With Visible Gas Level

Another standout feature is its translucent window, which allows users to easily check how much LPG is left inside the cylinder. This removes the guesswork involved in estimating gas levels and helps households plan timely refills.

The cylinder’s distinct blue-and-yellow colour scheme also makes it easily distinguishable from traditional red metal cylinders.

Price and Security Deposit Details

Bharat Petroleum has outlined clear pricing during the launch and rollout phases:

  • During launch (swap option):
Existing customers can replace a metal cylinder with a plastic one by paying an additional ₹300 security deposit.

  • New connection during launch:
    Approximate cost of ₹2,500.

  • After full rollout:
Security deposit is expected to be around ₹3,350.

For comparison, the security deposit for a metal LPG cylinder is currently about ₹2,200. Importantly, customers are allowed to return the plastic cylinder if they are not satisfied and switch back to the traditional option.

Nationwide Rollout Plans

Following the Goa launch, Bharat Petroleum plans to introduce the plastic LPG cylinder in at least 10 cities in the next phase, with a gradual expansion to all major metropolitan areas. The company sees this as a long-term shift rather than a limited pilot project.

A Step Towards Safer and Smarter Cooking

The introduction of plastic LPG cylinders marks a significant step forward in improving everyday kitchen safety and convenience in India. With its lighter weight, enhanced safety mechanisms, rust-free material, and smart visibility features, this innovation has the potential to redefine how households use cooking gas.

As availability expands, millions of families may soon move away from heavy red cylinders and adopt a safer, smarter, and more user-friendly alternative—ushering in a new era for Indian kitchens.
