India’s first bullet train to carry 557 passengers; to reach speeds of 280 kmph
India’s first indigenous bullet train is set to launch soon. It will offer a range of special amenities to passengers and will undergo testing at speeds of 280 kmph.
The indigenous bullet train, designated as 'B28', is currently under development in India. It is being designed specifically with the needs of Indian passengers in mind. Beyond its high speed, the train will feature modern amenities and advanced safety technology.
The bullet train is being manufactured by the public sector undertaking BEML. Currently, the structural integrity and safety of the train's exterior framework are being evaluated. The train is intended for operation on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor.
Testing at 280 kmph
During the testing phase, India’s first indigenous bullet train will be operated at a speed of 280 kmph. However, for regular commercial service, plans are in place to cap its maximum speed at 249 kmph. According to the Railways, trials are expected to take place between May and June 2027, covering a stretch of approximately 100 km between Surat and Vapi. Regular passenger services on this section are anticipated to commence in August 2027.
Where will the testing take place?
As part of the safety evaluation, the strength of the train's exterior structure is being tested through a process known as a "squeeze test." This test assesses how well the train's framework can withstand intense pressure and external forces. It also evaluates the structural integrity and safety of the train in the event of a collision. These tests are being conducted at BEML’s manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.
Features of the bullet train
India’s first bullet train will be equipped with a wide array of amenities. Passengers on this train will be provided with a wide range of amenities; let’s take a look:
This bullet train will consist of a total of eight coaches, comprising four motor coaches and four trailer coaches.
The train will have a seating capacity for approximately 557 passengers, with dedicated spaces provided for passengers with disabilities.
This eight-coach train will be approximately 202 meters long.
The train will offer both Standard and Executive class seating. In the seven Standard class coaches, the seating configuration will feature three seats on one side and two on the other, while the Executive class will have two seats on each side.
There will be driver cabins at both the front and rear of the train, equipped with modern control systems to assist in operating the train and maintaining communication with the control center.
If needed in the future, two eight-coach train sets can be coupled together to form a 16-coach train.
The seats are designed to ensure passenger comfort during long journeys, providing ample legroom.
The train will be equipped with LED lighting to ensure excellent illumination.
Overhead racks will be provided for small bags, while designated areas within the coaches will be available for larger suitcases.
Charging points will be provided, allowing passengers to charge their mobile phones and laptops during the journey.
Additionally, the train will feature modern bio-toilets, large windows, secure passageways between coaches, information and announcements in Hindi and other languages, emergency contact systems, Wi-Fi, enhanced safety features, and an energy-efficient, modern air-conditioning system that regulates both temperature and humidity. Special technology will also be employed to minimize noise.
