Indian Railways is set to achieve a new milestone on July 17. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the country's first hydrogen-powered train in Haryana. This train will operate on an 89-kilometer route between Jind and Sonipat. Based on hydrogen fuel cell technology, this train is considered a major step towards green transport for Indian Railways. While the inauguration is scheduled for July 17, Northern Railway has yet to decide when regular services for the general public will commence.

**Will cover the 89-kilometer journey in two hours**
According to the operational schedule released by the Railway Board, during regular operations, hydrogen train number 74010 will depart from Jind at 7:40 AM and arrive in Sonipat at 9:40 AM—a journey of approximately two hours. On the return leg, train number 74009 will depart from Sonipat at 10:40 AM and reach Jind at 1:00 PM.

The Railway Board has instructed Northern Railway to determine and communicate the date for starting regular passenger services as soon as possible following the inauguration.

**The train will halt at these 12 stations**
The train will stop at a total of 12 stations between Jind and Sonipat. These include Jind City, Pandu Pindara, Lalit Khera, Bhambhewa, Ishapur Kheri, Butana, Khandrai, Gohana, Rabhra, Lath, Mohana Haryana, and Barwasni stations. The train will stop at all these stations during the return journey as well. Thousands of commuters living along this route are expected to benefit from this fast, modern, and eco-friendly rail service.

**The train will make two round trips daily**
According to documents previously released by the Railway Board, this 10-coach hydrogen DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train will cover a distance of approximately 356 kilometers daily. It will complete two round trips between Jind and Sonipat. The train has seating arrangements for 682 passengers, with a total carrying capacity of approximately 2,600 passengers. **120 km/h speed in trials, but will operate at 75 km/h**
The hydrogen train achieved a top speed of 120 km/h during trials. However, considering passenger safety and operational requirements, its maximum operational speed has been capped at 75 km/h.

Developed following Railway Board approval in May 2026, this train utilizes hydrogen fuel cells instead of a diesel engine. This technology generates electricity to power the train and significantly reduces pollution.

**Train to operate under special monitoring for the first three months**
Prioritizing safety, the Ministry of Railways has directed that engineers and technical experts trained in hydrogen technology accompany the train during its initial three months of operation. Any technical issues arising during the journey will be addressed immediately. Indian Railways believes this project will pave the way for clean and sustainable rail transport in the future.
