No Smoking Indian Railways Rule: If, while traveling on a train, you spot anyone smoking or consuming any form of intoxicant, you can file a complaint immediately without any delay. Read on to learn how.

Smoking in Trains: Everyone is well aware of just how dangerous smoking is for our health. Yet, even today, there are many individuals who cause inconvenience to others by smoking cigarettes inside train coaches, near doorways, or within restrooms. With the safety and health of passengers in mind, Indian Railways has now enacted several major and significant regulations regarding smoking.

What is the Penalty for Smoking on a Train?

According to official information, under Section 167 of the Railways Act, smoking inside any train coach, restroom, or within railway premises is considered a fully punishable offense. If an individual fails to adhere to these anti-smoking regulations, the Railway Department may impose a fine ranging from ₹100 to ₹500 on that person. However, in light of current circumstances, there are proposals currently under consideration to increase this fine amount.

Jeopardizing the Health of Fellow Passengers

Smoking on trains not only causes inconvenience to other passengers but also has a profound impact on their health. From a health perspective, cigarette smoke spreads rapidly within enclosed coaches, posing a particularly severe risk to children, the elderly, individuals with respiratory ailments, and pregnant women.

How to File a Complaint Against Smoking?

If, while traveling on a train, you observe someone smoking or consuming intoxicants, you can immediately file a complaint with the on-duty Train Captain or Ticket Collector without any delay. Additionally, you can register a complaint against such individuals by calling the Indian Railways helpline number, 139. Moreover, you can also register a complaint—along with the coach number—via the Railways' official 'Rail Madad' app or on the social media platform X, enabling the RPF to take the strictest possible action against those smoking or consuming intoxicants at the next station.
