Indian Railways New Rule for Women: Special Quota for Lower Berths

Women traveling by train can now easily avail lower berths without any hassle. Indian Railways has introduced a special quota to ensure their convenience and comfort. This initiative is particularly beneficial for women who may face difficulties accessing upper or middle berths. Here’s how you can take advantage of this provision.
Special Quota for Women Travelers
According to the Railway Ministry, a specific number of lower berths are reserved for women passengers in mail and express trains. The allocation is as follows:
-
Sleeper Class: 7 lower berths per coach
-
Third AC & Second AC: 4 lower berths per coach
-
Rajdhani, Duronto, and AC Express Trains: 4 seats in Second AC and 5 seats in Third AC
Additionally, this quota is available for senior citizens aged 45 years and above, as well as for pregnant women (with a doctor’s certificate).
Special Quota in Garib Rath Express
In Garib Rath Express, a separate quota of 6 berths in the Third AC class is allocated exclusively for women. Unlike other trains, there is no age restriction for this quota. However, only single women passengers or groups of women are eligible to use it. Similarly, in Mail and Express trains, 6 berths in the sleeper class are reserved for women travelers.
How to Avail the Women’s Quota
-
The Women’s Quota is initially reserved only for single women travelers or groups of women.
-
Until the first reservation chart is prepared, only female passengers will be allocated these berths.
-
If there are any unclaimed berths after the first reservation chart, they will first be allotted to women on the waiting list.
-
If berths still remain unoccupied, they will be reassigned to senior citizens.
-
After all allocations, if there are still vacant berths, the ticket checking staff will have the authority to assign them to other eligible women or senior citizens with RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) confirmed tickets.
This initiative by Indian Railways aims to enhance the safety and comfort of female passengers, ensuring a hassle-free travel experience.
