The Railway Minister explained that Indian Railways provides AC class passengers with two bedsheets, a pillow cover, and a hand towel for every journey. The first bedsheet is used to cover the berth (seat), while the second serves as a layer beneath the blanket, ensuring the woollen blanket does not come into direct contact with the passenger's body. This cover is washed after every journey—meaning it is for single use.

Additionally, as a pilot project, passengers on the North Western Railway and the new Vande Bharat Sleeper train running between Kamakhya and Howrah are being provided with special blanket covers that are washed after every trip. The Railways is leveraging advanced technology to maintain standards of hygiene and cleanliness for linens. A pilot project utilizing AI-based stain detection technology has been launched in the laundries of the Pune, Jaipur, and Jodhpur divisions to identify stains and ensure cleanliness. AI-automated cameras have been installed in these laundries. Additionally, 'Whito-Meters' are being used across all mechanized laundries to assess the whiteness, brightness, and cleanliness of the linens, while the entire laundering process is monitored via CCTV cameras.

Know the Lifespan of Your Bed Sheets, Pillows, and Blankets
According to Railway regulations, items used on trains have a defined service life, after which they are replaced. The lifespan of cotton or handloom bed sheets used on trains is 12 months (1 year), while that of poly-blend bed sheets is 24 months (2 years); they are replaced once this period expires.

Meanwhile, the lifespan for pillow covers and face towels provided to passengers is set at 9 months. In contrast, pillows provided in AC coaches and woolen blankets—supplied to protect passengers from the cold—have a service life of 24 months (2 years).

According to the Railways, items that are no longer fit for use or have deteriorated are periodically removed in accordance with established rules and replaced with new stock.
