Indian Railways child ticket rules: Carry your child's age proof (such as an Aadhaar card or birth certificate) during the journey so you can present it if the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) asks for it.

Indian Railways: Indian Railways is an integral part of the lives of ordinary citizens across the country. Approximately 20 million (2 crore) passengers travel via the network daily. Purchasing a ticket is mandatory for travel.

When traveling with family, the question often arises: does a separate ticket need to be purchased for a 4-year-old child? Or can they travel without a ticket alongside other family members? Let’s look at the railway rules regarding this.

What are the rules for booking seats for children?

According to Indian Railways rules, purchasing a ticket and booking a berth for children under the age of 5 is optional. A 4-year-old child can travel for free, provided no separate berth is booked for them. Such children are permitted to travel without a ticket when accompanied by their parents or guardians.

As per railway regulations, if your child travels on your lap or shares your seat, there is no need to purchase a separate ticket for them. However, if you are on a long journey and desire a comfortable trip, you can certainly book a separate seat or berth for a 4-year-old child, though you will be required to pay the full fare.

Rules for children aged 5–12 years

Railways offers two options for children in this age group: if you do not opt for a separate seat for the child, you can select the 'NOSB' (No Seat/Berth) option while booking the ticket. In this case, you are required to pay half the fare. If you require a separate confirmed berth or seat for the child, the full fare must be paid.

Always carry these documents.

During the journey, make sure to keep a valid age proof for the child—such as an Aadhaar card or birth certificate—with you so that you can present it if the TTE asks for it.
