Fluctuations in crude oil prices have an immediate impact on commercial cylinders, as their pricing is determined by market risks and international crude oil rates.

Amidst high demand during the festive season and a surge in crude oil prices, the LPG rates for today have been released. With the price of crude oil reaching $113 per barrel, there could be an impact on petroleum products used in our daily lives—Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) being one of them. Notably, rising crude oil prices are likely to have a more significant effect on the cost of commercial LPG compared to domestic LPG cylinders.

What are the current rates for domestic LPG?

Domestic LPG cylinders are cheapest in Noida, priced at ₹939.50. This is followed by Mumbai and Delhi, where the prices are ₹941.50 and ₹942 per cylinder, respectively. In Kolkata, an LPG cylinder costs ₹968, while in Chennai, it is priced at ₹957.50. Similarly, in South Indian cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Thiruvananthapuram, a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder is being sold at ₹994, ₹944.50, and ₹951 per cylinder, respectively. Meanwhile, LPG is most expensive in Patna, where it costs ₹1,031.50 per cylinder.

Impact of crude oil on commercial LPG

On Thursday, Brent crude closed above $113 per barrel, while WTI crude was trading at around $99 per barrel. The prices of commercial LPG are significantly influenced by international crude oil prices. According to information provided by the Ministry of Petroleum, the prices of commercial LPG—used in hotels and businesses—are adjusted on a monthly basis, as they are directly linked to international benchmarks.

This is not the case for domestic LPG cylinders. To shield the general public and households from inflation, the government maintains a high degree of control over the prices of 14.2 kg domestic gas cylinders—often keeping them stable for political or social reasons. Consequently, even when crude oil prices rise, the cost of domestic cylinders may remain unchanged for months, whereas the prices of commercial cylinders are subject to substantial increases.
