Income Tax Return Refund Status: If your income tax refund hasn't yet been credited to your bank, there's no need to panic. Refund delays can be due to reasons like data verification, bank detail errors, or a lack of e-verification. The status can be easily checked online.

Income Tax Return Refund Status: If you've filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) this year, but your refund hasn't yet been credited to your bank account, there's no need to panic. Many taxpayers are complaining about refund delays this time. Let's understand the reasons for these delays and how you can check their status from the comfort of your home.

Why are refunds delayed?

This year, the Income Tax Department has tightened its return verification process. Refunds of more than ₹20,000 are being thoroughly scrutinized, especially to prevent any false or fraudulent claims. The ITR filing deadline of September 16, 2025, saw a significant increase in the number of returns, which is naturally leading to delays in processing. The department's focus is on verifying correct details and tax records, which is why refunds are being credited late in some cases.

Main reasons for refund delays:

  • Errors in PAN, Aadhaar, or bank account details
  • Bank account not pre-validated on the e-filing portal
  • Delays in e-verification after return filing. If you fail to e-verify within 30 days of filing your ITR, processing stops.
  • Mismatch in Form 26AS, AIS, or TDS
  • Refund case selected for manual verification
  • Old tax demands remaining outstanding
