Social media

Recently, the Madras High Court and the Delhi High Court heard such incidents in which private photos or videos of women and adolescents were leaked on the internet without consent. The court described it as causing serious mental agony and gave strict instructions to the government and social media companies. If this ever happens to you or someone you know, then instead of panicking, you can protect your privacy by taking some concrete steps. The methods given below can help you...

1. Report content immediately

Use the built-in report feature on social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube). Tell the platform that this content has been uploaded without your consent. As per the IT Rules 2021 and amended Rules 2023 in India, all platforms have to accept the complaint within 24 hours and provide a solution within a maximum of 15 days.

2. Contact the website directly

If the content is on a website that you do not control, search for the website owner's information through the WHOIS tool and email them. Request to remove them in calm and professional language.

3. Report cybercrime

National Cyber Crime Portal: www.cybercrime.gov.in or Sahyog Portal: A Useful government platform for digital security and redressal of grievances. Visit https://sahyog.mha.gov.in/ to complain.

4. De-Index and Takedown Request

Google De-Index Tool:support.google.com/websearch/answer/6302812

This allows you to block your content from Google search. This does not remove the content, but it does not appear in search.

DMCA Takedown Notice: If someone else is using your copyrighted content, it can be removed through a DMCA notice.

5. Use special tools

Take It Down (by Meta): https://takeitdown.ncmec.org is designed to prevent nude or objectionable images of minors. A 'hash' of your photo/video is created, and the actual file is not uploaded. This hash meta helps to find and remove matching content from platforms like TikTok.

StopNCII.org: https://stopncii.org, this tool specifically protects against Non-consensual Intimate Image (NCII) i.e., private images without permission. Hashes are created and sent to platforms. More than 90% success rate; more than 3 lakh images removed. If the matter is serious (such as defamation, obscenity, cyberbullying), file a legal notice, Cease and Desist letter, or petition in court.
