IIT Kanpur to Offer Medical Degrees; Here’s the Plan

IIT Kanpur is gearing up to venture into medical education through its Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology. To facilitate this, a hospital and research facilities are being developed on the campus.

IIT Kanpur will no longer be limited to engineering and technology education. Through the institute’s Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, preparations are underway to expand into the field of medical education, with a hospital and research facilities currently being developed on campus. However, IIT Kanpur’s entry into the medical sector will not begin with the MBBS program; instead, the institute plans to first focus on advanced medical education and super-specialty programs.

Advanced Medical Degrees to Launch First

According to Professor Anil K. Lalwani, Dean of the Gangwal School, IIT Kanpur plans to launch post-graduate medical degrees and super-specialty programs initially. These will include courses such as MD and MS, as well as super-specialty degrees like DM and MCh. Plans to introduce the MBBS program will follow later. Professor Lalwani estimates that this process could take about 3 to 4 years. Consequently, the initial phase of medical education at IIT Kanpur will focus on training expert doctors and integrating medical and engineering research.

500-Bed Super-Specialty Hospital Under Construction

Work is also underway to establish the necessary clinical infrastructure for medical education at IIT Kanpur. The 500-bed Yadupati Singhania Super-Specialty Hospital is being constructed near the Gangwal School. It is scheduled to become operational by the end of this year, with the first patient expected to be admitted by March 2027. Additionally, a 50-bed Cancer Care and Research Center is being developed. These facilities will be utilized for patient care as well as for medical training and research.

Plans for 60 New Faculty Members

To advance this initiative, IIT Kanpur has received initial approval to recruit 60 new faculty members. These will include experts in clinical medicine and research. The institute aims to drive research forward by integrating medical science with engineering. Additionally, there are plans to provide students with opportunities to work in fields related to AI and modern medical technology.

Wait Required for MBBS

While preparations to launch a medical degree program at IIT Kanpur are underway, admissions for the MBBS course will not begin immediately. Necessary approvals, hospital faculty, and clinical facilities still need to be established. Consequently, the institute currently plans to start with advanced medical education and super-specialty programs.
