Indian Railways Rules: In the event of a confirmed ticket and a waiting list on the same PNR, the Railways only allows confirmed or RAC passengers to travel. The passenger with a waiting list ticket is not included in the chart and is not permitted to board the train. After the chart is prepared, the waiting list ticket is automatically cancelled, and the refund is credited to the account by IRCTC.

Indian Railways Rules: During train travel, it often happens that two people book tickets on the same PNR, but by the time the chart is prepared, one ticket is confirmed, and the other remains on the waiting list. This raises the question: can both passengers travel? What do the Indian Railways rules say about this? Let's explore this in detail.

Confirmed and RAC passengers are allowed to travel.

According to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website, passengers whose status is fully confirmed or fully RAC after chart preparation are listed on the chart. These passengers have full right to travel on the train without interruption.

What happens if there is one confirmed and one waiting list?

IRCTC states that if your PNR has one confirmed ticket and one waiting list, the Railways displays both in the chart when the chart is prepared. However, this does not mean that a waiting list passenger can travel on the train. Only a confirmed or RAC passenger is authorized to travel. A waiting list passenger cannot travel without a seat.

E-ticket cancellation rules after chart preparation

If a ticket is booked online, it can be cancelled through the IRCTC website or app only before the chart is prepared. Cancellation is not possible online after the chart is prepared. Passengers should email IRCTC's official email address, etickets@irctc.co.in, as soon as possible to cancel their tickets. The email must include the PNR, train number, passenger details, and the reason for the cancellation. IRCTC then receives the refund's approval from the railway administration and transfers the money to your bank account.

Charts do not include the name of passengers with waiting tickets.

When the chart is prepared, if a passenger's ticket remains fully waitlisted, the railway removes their name from the reservation chart. Such passengers are not permitted to board the train. If they board a train with a waiting ticket and are caught, they are considered to be traveling without a ticket and may be fined.

How to get a refund on a waiting ticket?

After the chart is prepared, the railway automatically cancels waiting tickets. IRCTC then receives the refund from the Railways and sends the money back to the same bank or wallet from which the payment was made.

Is travel possible?

If there is one confirmed ticket and one waiting list ticket on a PNR, only the person with the confirmed or RAC ticket can travel. A person with a waiting list ticket cannot travel on the train.
