Several accounts banned
According to the report, OpenAI stated that many of the banned accounts were using ChatGPT in conjunction with other tools. In a report to US authorities, the company stated that some social media accounts were being used for cybercrime under the guise of dating agencies.
Some of these accounts were linked to China. Through these accounts, OpenAI's generative AI models were being used to gather information about American individuals, online forums, and the locations of federal buildings. ChatGPT was also being used for advice on face-swiping software.
Misuse was taking place
OpenAI stated in its report that the banned accounts were using ChatGPT to send emails to state-level US officials, posing as policy analysts and paid consultants in business and finance. The company stated that individual accounts associated with Chinese law enforcement were banned.
OpenAI revealed in its report that ChatGPT accounts were also being used to run dating scams targeting men in Indonesia. More than 100 people were targeted by dating scams.
The company stated that promotional text and promotions were being generated using ChatGPT to perpetrate the scam. Advertisements for fake dating services were urging people to join the platform and complete tasks for a large payment. Meanwhile, fraudulent lawyers were also using ChatGPT to target individuals.
