There are three main types of courses available to become a nurse in a government hospital.

BSc Nursing is a four-year graduate course. Admission to this program requires Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English in the 12th grade. This course is considered the most suitable and popular for government jobs.

GNM, which lasts approximately three to three and a half years, is open to students who have passed the 12th grade. This course also offers the opportunity to become a staff nurse in government hospitals.

ANM, which lasts two years, is primarily suitable for working in rural and primary health centers.

Eligibility

For admission to a nursing course, a candidate must have passed the 12th grade. Science subjects (PCB) are mandatory for BSc Nursing. Most institutions require a minimum of 45 to 50 percent marks.

Why is registration with the Nursing Council necessary?

After completing a nursing course, it is mandatory to register with the State Nursing Council. This registration proves that the candidate has received training from a recognized institution and is qualified to work as a nurse. Without registration, employment in a government or private hospital is impossible. Government hospitals offer various nursing positions, such as staff nurse, nursing officer, ward sister, and community health nurse. Nurses can also advance to higher positions based on experience and promotion. Over time, they can also assume administrative responsibilities.

Salary:

The starting salary of a nurse in a government hospital can range from approximately ₹35,000 to ₹60,000 per month. In addition, dearness allowance, house rent allowance, and other government benefits are also provided.
